The Day I Met Sam Skinner and What it Can Teach Us About the PB Oil Spill and Other Things

The photo above was taken in Seward Alaska during the Exxon oil spill in 1989. The numbers tell a story: Of approximately 2,900 birds found, just over 518 of them were "saved". As depressing as those statistics appear, the actual story is much worse. Of the 518 live birds that were found and taken to the bird rescue center in Seward, many…

Meet Doogie!

The first photo says it all....Doogie LOVES squeekie toys! The second photo shows him waiting patiently for his toy! Sometimes the older dogs are overlooked & this poor guy sat at an impound facility for almost 2 months ---hoping that his master would come and claim him. Well...that didn't happen so now we have him and hope to find him a great home to spend the…

The Hubris is Breathtaking

I apologize in advance for this somewhat off-topic post. To a certain degree, I don't think it is all that off topic. However, regular readers of our blog are likely to think discussion of the creation of the first "synthetic" life does not really fit into the typical content found here. However, after having watched a YouTube video relating to the announcement… Continue

German Shepherd Beaten to Death at Red Lake

Does anyone have any other information on the poor dog that was beaten to death by someone at Red Lake. I cried when I read about it in Sunday's Pioneer Press. What is with the poor dogs that are brought down from that area to Animal Ark and other animal facilities for care?

Group 52957 the Brownies from Hastings, wanted to help animals for their community service project. They chose the Animal Ark. They used part of the money they raised from selling Girl Scout cookies to purchase food and toys for the shelter animals. They had a field trip to Walmart and stocked up on all kinds of fun things to give our shelter dogs and cats. Thank you so much for your…

The Nation's Eye is On No Kill

Yesterday, I was humbled and honored to speak to a large audience at a day-long seminar that was included as part of the national conference of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The topic of the workshop, which was sponsored and coordinated by Maddie's Fund, was getting to a no kill nation by 2015. A prestigious group of speakers, including several shelter directors… Continue

Sheperd of the Valley Lutheran Church Visits The Ark

On Monday, we had a visit from from the Sheperd of the Valley Lutheran Church group. The kids were the 6th grade confirmation group. They needed to do community service work for part of their confirmation project.

They chose Animal Ark because they love animals. We gave them a tour of the Ark's facility, and they gave us a bunch of great donations. The donations included, toys for both cats and dogs, rawhides, dog biscuits,…
