You never can tell about people or dogs. Sometimes the most shy, serious-looking ones turn out to be party animals when you get to know them. That's certainly the case with pretty Angelica, a feral mixed-breed dog who came to Ark from Red Lake. She was found in an abandoned van with 8 puppies, 4 of whom survived and were adopted. Angelica has not been as adoptable as her babies because she doesn't seem to have had a lot of good experiences with…

The photo is of our dog Joey! He was having a great time playing in the Ark park with one of his buddies, Jasmine. It was a nice day to be outside, not so hot and humid....so thanks to our volunteer Sam for bringing these two out to the Ark park for some exercise and fun.
It was a slower than usual Saturday at the shelter. However, our sweet kitten Clark was adopted by a family that had already adopted another kitten from us. He did…

Mary posted a little about the puppy mill auction rescue we got involved with today. Though it is really late and I am tired, I wanted to take a minute to post this video about this effort.
The dogs were in horrible shape, but I could also tell that, thanks to the wonderful care they had been getting at Underdog Rescue, they were already starting the healing process. A huge thanks to Shannon and everyone at Underdog for helping these dogs.
Here is the…

Until recently, these dogs were just numbers. Numbers on a puppy mill auction lot sheet. Numbers on a puppy mill operator's balance sheet. Just numbers.
After a recent rescue effort, launched by
Underdog Rescue in Minnesota, these dogs now have names. Additionally, thanks to…

A new study by the No Kill Advocacy Center has proven there is little, if any, correlation between funding and life saving in shelters. Very wealthy shelter can have poor save rates while poorer communities can have very high save rates.
This study compared per-capita spending on animal control with overall save rates. The answer: the data is all over the map.
Clearly, adequate funding is needed to…

About 1 hour ago, oopalonga on YouTube posted the 421st comment to the Animal Wise Radio video titled Denver's Pit Ban Bull. I thought I would post it here, because it is pretty enlightening.
Mike, what's even funnier is if you call Denver's Animal Control Center. I asked them what exactly qualifies a dog as a "pitbull" and they gave me no definitive answer. Ultimately, if you suspect your dog to have "pitbull-like" characteristics, you then, according…

Today on Animal Wise Radio, in celebration of Father's Day, we talked with Richard Avanzino, President of Maddie's Fund. Thought by many to be the father of the no kill movement in the United States, Avanzino was the head of the San Francisco SPCA when that community ended the killing of healthy, adoptable dogs and cats. He…

The day isn't over yet, however, thus far it's been a day for the doggies! We have had 3 dog adoptions. Our sweet Ivy has warmed up the hearts of a family that wants to give her the space and time that she needs to adjust to them. It was great to see her leave with them and we hope it will be her forever home.
Cosmo also found someone that he really seemed to enjoy being with. Our third…

A colleague recently forwarded the following link to a story to me......
The story tells of a litter of puppies cloned from a 9-11 rescue dog. Much has been written and speculated about cloning of animals (or people for that matter). I sort of lump my uneasiness about this into the same category that has me avoiding "genetically engineered" foods. I think the science is…

I awoke this morning to a floury of humorous emails about
the PETA/Obama/Fly Fiasco. In the fog of the morning (I began getting the emails even before I sipped my first cup of coffee) I first thought it had to be a joke. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was chastising the President for swatting a fly?…

Please send your prayers up for our Dumpster Kitty. He was last sited at his normal outdoor feeding spot on Sunday, 6/14. At that time, it was noted that one of his ears had been ripped and that he had some bloody scabs on his head. He was weak and a much smaller version of what he used to be when he was returned to the "wild". He would have a hard time defending himself. I just hope he is not helplessly suffering in the woods. I want to picture him over the Rainbow Bridge. Please say a prayer…

Some of you may recognize me as a volunteer at the ark on Saturdays. Come this past January even though it has been really hard on me not to be there i found out i was expecting & the doctor wanted me to take it easy since i have had some " trouble" in the past. But thank goodness for the shelter blogs as it has kept me in touch even though I have not been able to be there physically to walk the dogs. I'm afraid come Sept. we are sadly moving even farther away from Animal Ark so I will more…

It is a good thing I work for a no kill shelter. I understand all too well the emotional costs associated with killing animals.
My spirit would simply not survive working at a shelter that routinely killed animals. It is just too hard and too painful. I am therefore grateful that I would work for an organization that values the lives of animals as much as I do.
Killing animals that are not terminally ill…
