Thanks to our wonderful volunteers who supplied Louie with his Halloween outfit! We just had to share a couple of photos. Also, thank you so much to our wonderful volunteers that provided some great "treats" for our animals today.....and for the "treats" for the staff too! Happy Halloween to… Continue

In a story coming out in today's Pioneer Press about a dog attack there is much speculation about what happened. Unfortunately, no one seems to know. Even the victim does not remember.
It is a bizarre and gruesome tale of a retired police officer and a bull dog rescued from a Texas shelter.
The dog had lived with the victim for five months and was apparently an angel with the people, the other family dog,… Continue
These are adoption pleas for animals in other states, however, some of these rescues are open to adoptive parents or fosters from out of state. These posts are also via Facebook but all the info is provided here in case you don't have a Facebook account. Thank you for your time.
Josh~ still urgent at Irving Shelter TX

A little while ago, I posted a blog about meeting some of the cast of 101 Dalmatians, which made its on-stage debut in Minneapolis. I mentioned the generous donation the cast of the show had collected for Animal Ark. And I said what a thrill it was to meet… Continue

I am sad that I did not get a chance to meet Baxter while he was alive. A very special therapy dog, Baxter lived to the amazing age of 20 human years, which is something like 140 dog years.
More important than his age was his mission and purpose. He was not just any therapy dog. He was a therapy dog for people in hospice care. He would help them focus, to smile, to feel love and to let go. And, by all accounts, he did this job beautifully, even up until the time when he was needing… Continue
If you are an owner of a dog that belongs to a 'dangerous breed' category and you also have a child or a visiting small child please take this as a warning.
Don't leave your dog with a small child unattended under any circumstances!!!
Only one little moment was enough for the following to happen.
***this was an e-mail I received from my bully-loving mother.… Continue
When I started my rounds on Saturday morning there was a silence that struck me. I was already missing the loud meowing of my sweet girl Mandy (pictured above). Our Mandy went over the rainbow bridge earlier this week. She had been suffering from kidney disease and was to the point where there was no quality of life left for her. I take comfort in knowing that she is now meowing up a storm with her new found buddies on the other side of the rainbow… Continue
All 3 dogs were great, very tolerant of their grooming. I have to say I was most impressed with Bo because his took the longest and he was very… Continue

Malcolm Gadwell recently explored the similarities between dog fighting and football. It is a riveting piece that everyone should read. There, naturally, are some major differences:
* Dogs used in dog fighting do not make a choice to be there.
* Dogs used in dog fighting do not get paid multimillion dollar contracts for their "work".
The article, however, sheds some very interesting light into both endeavors, one I would call a sport, the other a… Continue

Following news about police in Austin, Minnesota confiscating a family pet my phone has been ringing off the hook today. The dog in questions is white and looks pretty much like a white German Shepherd. Her name is Dakota. She has not bitten anyone or done anything wrong.
But there is a problem.
Her owner claims she is a wolf and that they bought her on Craigslist. The City of Austin has an ordinance against the keeping of wild animals as pets, which is a good… Continue
In an extended interview on Animal Wise Radio, author, animal welfare leader and founder of the no kill advocacy center Nathan Winograd talks about a recent Op Ed written by the CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, Wayne Pacelle. In the piece Pacelle asks people to "embrace" Michael Vick.
Before writing this editorial, Pacelle has made a series of appearances with Michael Vick, and has indicated he plans more.
Winograd has much to say on this topic. One of the… Continue
It's Kylie! Some of you, I'm sure, remember Kylie the Pit Bull. She'd spent more than her fair share of time at the shelter, after being adopted and returned several times, through no fault of her own, before finally meeting her true and forever family. JJ, her mom, had found me on Facebook a few weeks ago, and I'd asked if I could share some of her pics and stories of Kylie...of course, she said!…
That Minneapolis was chosen as the city to host the opening of the musical stage adaptation of 101 Dalmatians would be enough of a gift for Minnesota. However, the touring company of the show decided they wanted to leave something behind specifically for the animals.
They took up a collection for Animal Ark's animals and presented it to some of our staff and volunteers at the closing show in Minneapolis… Continue
It has been about a year and a half since Animal Ark released the video Strayed: The Story of how the Animal Welfare Community Lost its Way. The video was inspired by, and based on, Nathan Winograd's book Redemption. Though not a substitute for reading the book, I like to think the 20-minute video hits many of the high points, and even includes… Continue
Her name is Jackie Brown and I'm doing a documentary on her called "The American Puppy Project"
I'm not sure that she is a pitbull, but that's what I call her, because that's what the police and the news media would call her if she were to attack someone. She's taller and larger than a typical pitbull though. You can see her in action @ http://dogtv.com
