Helping to Build a No Kill Nation

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Cupid. He was picked up as a stray and brought to Shamrock Animal Hospital. After his impound time was up, he came to the Ark. We found out later that his owners had moved, and had left the gate open at their new home by accident, and Cupid wondered out of the yard.  He was an older guy who could not see or hear very well.

When he came to the Ark on 3/16/11, the front desk staff fell in love with him immediately.  He was a joyful dog who absolutely loved people.  He loved being up front with the staff, where he could just hang out.  He was not a problem at all, as he was totally housebroken, and spent his days smiling at us, hoping for treats, or just napping.  His favorite past time was napping, but did enjoy a walk now and then.

Sadly, when his owners were contacted, they decided that they did not want him back, as he was going to be too much of a "burden" for them.  For you see, they were not interested in a blind, deaf dog that now needed to be on  some joint medication to ease the pain of his arthritis.

The staff felt terrible, because they had hoped that Cupid could spend the rest of his days back with his family who loved and missed him.  Sadly, that was not the case.   For the next few months the staff racked their brains trying to come up with a solution so that Cupid could find happiness and a family that that would love him just the way he was.  Then, one day, a lady came in (we refer to her as an angel), and asked to see Cupid.  We were so surprised because Cupid had not had a lot of potential adopters.  She had seen him on our website and knew of his health issues.  She fell in love with him, and brought him home.  Our angel's name is Cheryl.  Cheryl took care of Cupid for the remainder of his life.  She gave him all of the love and kindness he deserved.  She loved him so much and was so sad when he went over the Rainbow Bridge.  We have told her many times that she is an angel, because she takes in the old, weak and sick dogs that no one else wants.  Thank you Cheryl, for taking such wonderful care of Cupid.  You gave him love and comfort for the last nine months of his life. You will always be our angel!

God bless you, Cheryl for taking Cupid in and loving him so.  I'm sure your heart is aching at your loss.  These animals are never with us long enough, and you especially were not given enough time to enjoy Cupid given his senior age when you adopted him.  I enjoyed my brief time with Cupid at the Ark and I thank you for opening your heart and home to him during his final year.  You truly are an Angel.

I am in tears reading this.  Cupid (I called him Grandpa Cupid) was such a joy to be around. He had the greatest sense of humor I've ever seen in a dog.  He made me laugh so much, especially the one day at the vet.  I took him in so they could put a fentynal patch on his leg.  I waited while they did this.  Suddenly I heard Grandpa barking and yelling like there was no tomorrow. Then I heard the vet say to him, "what the heck is wrong with you Cupid? Geesh, we're only shaving your leg."  That was my Cupid!  I miss him so much.  But when I heal a little more, I'll be back for another senior.

Thank you, Maggie, for giving our Cupid this special honor.
